Wat is er zo speciaal aan een titelnummer op een hiphopalbum? Voor het grootste deel gebruiken rappers titeltracks als een manier om een albums -kernbericht weer te geven
Neem bijvoorbeeld NAS Stillmatic. Het titelnummer kondigde zijn comeback aan naar een raplandschap dat hem had afgeschreven, en diende als een rallykreet voor zijn fans. Evenzo dacht Jay-Zs Blueprint na over zijn leven en de mensen die hem hebben geholpen zijn huidige positie te bereiken, waardoor de toon werd gezet voor een van de meest iconische albums in de hiphopgeschiedenis.
Maar het is niet alleen over het definiëren van een kernbericht van een albums. Titelstracks kunnen ook worden gebruikt als thematische startpunten of om een bepaald geluid of stemming te vestigen. Outkast, bijvoorbeeld, gebruikte titelnummers op hun eerste drie projecten om hun unieke geluid en stijl te definiëren, hen te onderscheiden van hun collega's en te helpen ze te vestigen als een van de meest invloedrijke hiphopduo's aller tijden .
